Meet me
Hi! My name is Dion Leung, and I've been a Seattle area native my whole life. I grew up and lived in Kent for the first 18 years of my life, then moved to Seattle where I attended the University of Washington, earning a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
I was drawn to programming when I was assigned to work on overhauling and automating AutoCAD procedures using AutoLISP. I quickly found out how fun coding was, and was excited with the possibilities. One thing led to another and before I knew it I found myself switching things up completely to pursue a career in web-development and here I am!
In my spare time I enjoy spending time outdoors (only if I take my allergy medicine!), playing sports like basketball, soccer, volleyball, and baseball, and making progress on my seemingly neverending list of shows to watch.

Calibrating a three-wire level in remote Alaska, waiting for fog to dissipate before helicopters could transport us! Unfortunately I don't have many photos of me coding, so please enjoy photos of me in my civil/environmental engineering roles.My unique skillset combines a civil and environmental engineering training with a passion for coding, bringing an innovative and analytic approach to the table. Dipping my feet into coding inspired me to pursue it further, and I enrolled in and completed a Web Development/Coding Bootcamp through the University of Washington.
Problem solving was a skill taught through my formal education - applying it to developing apps and feature-rich websites has been rather simple.
My strengths include meeting deadlines, effective communication, and teamwork. I also manage my time well, can work under pressure, and have extensive experience with data analysis (typically for surface water systems, but Microsoft Excel is versatile).

AVID Professional Learning guide

Created under contract with AVID Center, this is a tool allowing educators, school administrators, school board members, etc. to identify which AVID Programs are most suited for their school and situation.
As a front-end developer on this team of 5, my role was to take the designs and mock-ups created by the UI/UX team and create a web application using Vue.js and Nuxt.js.
The back-end API was created and maintained using C# and .NET, as well as utilizing Azure tables. Data was consumed on the front-end through JSON and simple querying.

Created under contract with AVID Center, this is a tool allowing educators, school administrators, school board members, etc. to identify which AVID Programs are most suited for their school and situation.
As a front-end developer on this team of 5, my role was to take the designs and mock-ups created by the UI/UX team and create a web application using Vue.js and Nuxt.js.
The back-end API was created and maintained using C# and .NET, as well as utilizing Azure tables. Data was consumed on the front-end through JSON and simple querying.

One of my first freelance projects, EPIC Physical Therapy was seeking a complete overhaul of their website. At the time, their website was poorly maintained and in a state of disarray with outdated information and poorly laid out.
My solution and proposal was to create a modern, mobile-responsive, and sleek site. Addressing client concerns was the forefront of my approach, and I led an agile-style process of weekly client meetings and demos.
I brought in several former students to collaborate with and create a team environment conducive to learning and applying skills taught in the bootcamp.

RocketListRocketList: an open-ended forum for quick answers, featuring live chat!

The final project of the bootcamp, RocketList combines a React frontend with a GraphQL and Apollo backend, with a live chat feature through Socket.io.This app won both the award for Best Functionality and the People's Choice Award.
Coined as a combination of the best parts of Reddit, Yahoo Answers, and Craigslist, registered users can create posts, respond to existing posts, and even join a live chatroom specific to the post at hand. This open-endedness connects people seeking services, advice, or general thoughts/reactions from the internet. A chat feature was introduced to decrease the likelihood of off-topic replies to a post, with users urged to summarize the happenings in a chat.
Styling was done primarily through Tailwind CSS, with loading animations coming from react-spinners as an npm package. Other features and packages used include popper.js, query-string, and react-emoji. I served as part of the frontend team, handling requests and focusing on mobile layout/optimization. I also was responsible for the custom rocket animation in the logo.
